Coaching & Player Development

Southern Highlands Netball Association is committed to developing players, coaches and volunteers through a supportive, positive and inclusive environment.

Our coaching approach is built around helping players develop confidence, teamwork and strong fundamental skills while ensuring that netball remains fun and engaging for all ages.

At the heart of netball development is mastering the basics. Players learn to move, catch, pass and make decisions under pressure. By focusing on these foundations, players build the skills and confidence required to progress through the sport and enjoy the game at every level.

Player Development

Across all age groups, our programs focus on developing the key skills of the game, including:

  • Movement, balance and agility

  • Catching and ball control

  • Passing techniques such as chest, shoulder, bounce and lob passes

  • Footwork and safe landing

  • Decision making and game awareness

Training sessions combine skill development with game-based activities so players can practise techniques in realistic game situations.

NetSetGO (Ages 5–7)

NetSetGO is the official junior entry program for netball in Australia and provides a fun introduction to the sport for children aged 5–7.

Sessions focus on developing fundamental motor skills such as running, jumping, balancing, throwing and catching through fun activities and modified games.

The program is designed to build confidence, coordination and teamwork while introducing young players to the basic skills and enjoyment of netball.

Junior Development

As players progress through the junior divisions, training begins to incorporate more structured skill development including:

  • Passing accuracy and timing

  • Catching under pressure

  • Movement and attacking play

  • Defensive positioning

  • Game strategy and teamwork

The focus remains on participation, improvement and enjoyment while helping players continue to build strong technical skills.

Supporting Coaches

Coaches play a critical role in the development of players and the culture of our association.

At SHNA we encourage coaches to create a positive environment where players feel supported, included and motivated to improve. Effective coaching involves clear communication, encouraging participation from every player and providing constructive feedback to help players develop.

Whether coaching beginner players or experienced teams, the goal is the same: helping players learn the game, improve their skills and enjoy being part of netball.
